The video installation We belong together critically addresses the historical relationship between visual technology and military development through a confrontation with visual media. It presents a YouTube-like instructional video on building a gimbal, played back at high speed. It ends with a completed object whose purpose would likely seem ambiguous to non-video experts, and whose form is reminiscent of a weapon. By emphasizing parallels between camera and weapon, shot and counter-shot, technical skills and knowledge transfer, the work negotiates the production of moving images online with a humorous reference to the YouTube genre of tech tutorials dominated by male creators.
